Can you relate? You have awesome ideas, you have the skills to execute, you have the time to put in the work, all the pre-conditions are set in your favor and then … you don’t. Either you get distracted by a new idea or a little voice inside tells you “aaah, it’s not worth it”, “it’s stupid”, or something else and then you also beat yourself up occasionally about this “bad habit” you have of procrastinating.
Some context ….
You don’t know this (yet) but I own multiple domains, built the websites on them with the purpose of writing about cool stuff I felt like sharing with the world, only to never be published. Every year (usually around my birthday) this desire to start a blog pops up again. And after writing a post, the next day I completely stop and quite frankly, forget about it.
The hypothesis
We do the things we perceive to be safe.
Step 1. Answering the following questions (at least 20 responses)
Step 2. For each response, finding 10-20 ways on how the perceived “negatives” would actually be a real benefit (with real examples)
Step 3. For each response, finding 10-20 ways of how not taking actions and protecting myself comes with disadvantages.
The questions I’ll be working on today
- If I were to proceed with the execution, what is the perceived risk?
- What concerns do I have?
- What challenges might be waiting for me there?
- What pain am I avoiding experiencing?
- What am I protecting myself from if I don’t make it there?
- What image of myself do I protect when I don’t execute?
